The worldwide Jubilee campaign mobilised millions
of people across the 5 continents. 24 million of these
signed the Jubilee petition (850,000 in Ireland). The
petition, together with the tens of thousands who surrounded
the G8 Summit at the end of the 1990s put the creditors
under pressure.
The Jubilee campaign was successful in putting the debt
issue high up on the international agenda. As a result
creditors (e.g. rich countries, the IMF and the World
Bank) increased the amount of debt cancellation on offer.
This however, falls far short of the Jubilee call for
a just and effective end to the debt crisis. Many of the
countries receiving debt reduction are still paying more
on debt than on health.
As part of the Debt and Development Coalition, Jubilee
Ireland participated in this campaign. Jubilee Ireland
continues to mobilise public support around Ireland
for an urgent and effective solution to the debt problem
