Argentina/IMF accord likely by November

Buenos Aires - President Eduardo Duhalde on Saturday said Argentina may reach an agreement to get financial aid from the International Monetary Fund before the November 9 deadline to repay US$250m of its debt with the World Bank.

"I see things are going well", Duhalde said of his country's negotiations in Washington with the IMF. The talks have already produced "a high degree of consensus that allows a quota of optimism," the caretaker leader told Radio Nacional of Buenos Aires.

A new group of government experts on Saturday flew to join an Argentine negotiating team already in Washington. Duhalde said his government, which is to step down next May after elections scheduled for March 30, expects "a reasonable and serious agreement" with the IMF. Argentina has a 30-day grace period beyond the October 9 deadline to pay the World Bank $250m. The debt would fall in default after November 9. But, Duhalde insisted, an agreement with the IMF is possible before that.
